What’s this got to do with business?
To lose a significant amount of weight, you have to have goals, and a plan.
You just can’t hope that the weight is going to miraculously fall off you.
And to lose the weight, you need to make changes to the bad habits that caused you to become overweight in the first place.
Once you work out the cause of your weight problem, and address those causes, you can change those habits and begin your path to a healthier life and a healthier body.
There really are only two causes of being overweight.
Those are:
- Eating too much.
- Moving too little.
And so the answers are simple:
- Eat less and eat less rubbish.
- Move more. More frequently and more often.
And it’s the same with your life and your business.
If you want to improve your business you need to do more of what makes you money and you need to do less of what stops you from making money.
The beauty of losing weight, and the beauty of growing your business is that in both endeavours, there are parameters and measures that you can record every day, and every week, and every month that show you whether your endeavours are off track or are on track.
The trouble is that the only people who succeed in losing weight [and keeping it off] and who succeed in growing their wealth and keeping it are those who set measurable achievable goals and consistently do the measuring.
Without the numbers you are only guessing.
Wins are paid on numbers. Not on stories.
You can share stories, but stories don’t pay the bills.
There’s a reason they only put small boxes on golf scorecards and not lines…
And that’s because lines are for writing stories, and they don’t want stories.
And in reality the number in the box always tells the story.
The second thing that successful people do is create accountability.
Zig Ziglar explained that there are two types of goals:
- Give up goals
- Get up goals
Ziglar said that with give up goals, you need to tell lots of people who are going to keep you accountable.
Like giving up smoking.
Or giving up drinking alcohol.
But with get up goals, you need to be selective as to who you tell, because there will be a lot of people who will want to see you fail these goals.
Like building a bigger business.
Or buying a flashy new car.
Accountability is important when losing weight, because the new habits you start do not have an immediate impact on your weight. And so the measurable and visible results of your efforts are delayed.
And that’s why Wayne Knight made adjustments along the way.
He had an end goal in sight, and he knew that at times he was going to need to recalculate his course of weight loss.
In business, sometimes you hit roadblocks.
Some people who hit those roadblocks will give up, while others will recalculate their course and manoeuvre past the roadblocks.
And that’s what business is all about.
And often, that’s what life is all about.
Sadly for the slim Wayne Knight, the weight loss has led to less work as an actor.
But he feels better.
And will probably live a lot longer.
He made the choice that was best for him as a person…
And he stuck to his goals, and his plan…
